Control
Immediately after the operation, we check the result of the treatment. Most patients are astonished to find out that they can already see fairly well again. A slight sensation of unease, or slight pain, may occur. These can be remedied with appropriate medication. Experience shows that any complaints occurring in the first hours to days after a treatment are moderate after a LASEK treatment, and mild after a LASIK treatment or an implantation.
Follow up controls
The follow up after the treatment depends on the type of procedure used. It includes the application of eye drops and regular controls at the center where the operation was performed. The first control is scheduled for the day after the operation. As a rule, three to five visits are planned over a three to six months period. It is extremely important to keep to the dates of the controls and to follow the prescriptions of the physician and medical personnel rigorously. You will be handed out an personal aide-mémoire with a schedule indicating when to take your medications and the phone number at which you can reach us at any time, even outside of the opening hours of the centers.
After the operation
Normally you can get back to work or your normal daily activities after one to three days. After an operation of the LASEK or PKR type, the time necessary to recover the necessary visual acuity is a bit longer. In any case you should avoid to stay in dusty environments during the first few weeks after the operation. You should also renounce visiting saunas or solariums for at least two weeks, and should avoid swimming or playing ball games such as handball, volley-ball, etc.
Seeing well without glasses
The aim of the operation is for you to be able to see well without glasses or contacts, from now on. This aim is achieved in practically all cases. This statement includes minimal residual errors of refraction which, if still detectable, do not represent any real physical handicap in every day life. If the visual defect could not be eliminated satisfactorily, a second treatment may still be possible. The costs of such a follow-up operation are included in the price. In rare cases, and in special situations, for instance when driving at night, an additional correction with glasses may remain necessary. With advancing years, depending on the correction, reading glasses may also be required.
