What risks are there?
With the procedures applied today in the realm of refractive surgery, the risks are generally extremely limited. It is true that serous complications have been reported in the scientific literature, but they were extremely rare. But as with any medical intervention, a residual risk cannot be excluded.
In exceptional cases, problems may arise during the formation of the corneal flap, and the laser treatment must then be postponed, however without any further complications (risk lower than 0.5%).
In case of problems during the healing process, in exceptional cases, the flap may have to be lifted up again, in order to treat the posterior surface of the corneal lamella, as well as the already treated corneal surface.
With the procedures PRK, LASEK and EPI-LASIK, corneal scars may form in rare cases, which may require a second treatment. Very rarely, these scars remain present permanently, with a decreased sight.
