Femtosecond laser

A special technology for highly specialized eye clinics

Femtosecond lasers are solid-state lasers working in the near infrared range (1053 nm), and are used to perform incisions in delicate tissue areas. High-precision cuts in the cornea of the eye are possible with this technology and laser surgery applications such as corneal transplants, intrastromal ring segments and lamellar cuts thus became even safer and more precise.

The IntraLase® femtosecond laser was introduced on the US market in 2001. Since then, more than 200,000 Femto-LASIK operations have already been carried out. The superiority of this new technology has been documented in numerous studies.

VEDIS was among the first users of this technology in Europe. Some initial drawbacks, such as the
Transient Light Sensitivity Syndrome (increased sensitivity to light in the first weeks after the operation) have long since been corrected. The femtosecond lasers used today represent a mature technology, allowing short treatment times of well below a minute and precise incisions.

As a Lead Clinic, VEDIS participates with a selection of clients in the clinical trial of the new femtosecond laser DA VINCI™, made by ZIEMER OPHTHALMICS, Switzerland. The advantage is on the applier’s side: the device is mobile and requires only about 1/3 of the space. It is our constant aim to offer the best and most up-to-date technologies to our patients. The results obtained at our clinic after a Femto-LASIK treatment show that this method has made LASIK even more safe, precise, and accurate.
